Bioterhealth / Fatty Acids

Chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, are some of the leading causes of death in modern medicine. Many people are at risk of developing these, sometimes debilitating conditions which can significantly affect the quality of our lives. Whilst the current statistics indicate that we are living longer lives, this longevity is often compromised by ill health.

This new pandemic of non infectious chronic illnesses is largely preventable through correct dietary and long term lifestyle changes. Poor health is often associated with poor nutrition. Good nutrition is the foundation for good health and most of us do not eat balanced daily diets due to poor food choices or economic reasons. The risk of developing these chronic diseases is further exacerbated by poor lifestyle habits such as smoking , lack of exercise and obesity. This further compromises the immune and nervous systems and leads to further risk of the body’s ability to maintain normal healthy function of the cells. This could also manifest in skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and nervous system disorders such as Alzheimers, depression, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) amongst others.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are essential for good health . The body cannot synthesise these fats and they must be consumed in adequate quantities in our daily diets. OmegaSelect Essential Fatty Acids provide a comprehensive range of Omega 3 (Salmon Oil) Omega 3:6:9 (Flaxseed Oil) Omega 6 (Evening Primrose Oil) and Omega 3:6 (Salmon Oil and Evening Primrose Oil) to supplement our diets with these essential, EFA’s.

FAQ’s about OmegaSelect

What is OmegaSelect?
OmegaSelect is a range of high quality, premium blend essential fatty acids. The essential fatty acids are obtained from top quality sources and then made available in a convenient softgel dose.

What are essential fatty acids?
The term “essential fatty acids” refers to two fatty acids (linoleic acid or omega-6 and linolenic acid or omega-3) which our bodies cannot synthesize and thus, must be consumed in the diet or supplied in the form of supplementation.

Why are essential fatty acids so important?
The essential fatty acids are needed for the production of compounds known as eicosanoids – which help regulate blood-clotting, blood pressure, heart rate, immune response and a wide variety of other biological processes.

Who should be using essential fatty acids?
Everyone needs to supplement their diet with essential fatty acids the body cannot produce them naturally.

Why do I need supplementation?
Modern diets are rich in Omega 6 essential fatty acids. For ideal health we need to consume a diet that consists of 4 parts Omega 6 to 1 part Omega 3. Because modern diets are so rich in Omega 6, we find ourselves consuming as much as 30 parts Omega 6 to 1 part Omega 3. The result is high cholesterol, high blood pressure, increased blood viscosity, inflammatory conditions, and many other common ailments. Supplementation together with a healthy eating plan will allow you to bring the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 back to 4:1 thereby ensuring health.

Why would I use Flaxseed oil?
Flaxseed oil is unique in that it supplies Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids. What is even better is that it supplies 57% Omega 3 essential fatty acids and 17% Omega 6 essential fatty acids. The fact that it is higher in Omega 3 than Omega 6 makes it the ideal supplement to balance out our daily essential fatty acid requirements. Modern diets are rich in Omega 6 and supplements should provide higher concentrations of Omega 3 to promote health.

What benefits will Flaxseed oil have for me?
Flaxseed oil is a source of Omega 3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids and it plays an important role in a wide variety of physiological functions.

It is therefore beneficial because it is known to:
  • Reduce raised cholesterol levels by improving the breakdown of cholesterol.
  • Decrease high blood pressure by keeping the arteries more elastic.
  • Lowers the risk of stroke and heart attack through its’ ability to thin out the blood.
  • Lessens pain associated with arthritis by blocking inflammatory pathways.
  • Alleviates conditions such as multiple sclerosis, eczema and psoriasis.
  • Improves digestive function.

What are the side effects associated with Flaxseed oil?
If flaxseed oil is used in high doses (more than 100 grams) or for prolonged periods of time, reduced potassium levels in the body may result. Low potassium levels can result in muscle weakness.

Gastrointestinal (GI) complaints such as bloating, diarrhoea and nausea may be experienced if taken on an empty stomach. Allergic reactions, such as itching, rashes, or swelling, have been reported by sensitive individuals.

Can I use Flaxseed oil with any chronic medication?
Yes, you can with most chronic medication. However if you are using any blood thinning medication such as warfarin, please consult your doctor immediately to monitor your clotting indexes

If I suffer from epilepsy can I use Flaxseed oil?
Essential fatty acids do promote increased brain function. As a result this may increase the occurrence of seizures. It is advisable to speak to your doctor before using essential fatty acids if you are epileptic.

Are there any other medical conditions that I need to be concerned about before using Flaxseed oil?
Flaxseed oil also contains compounds called lignans. Lignans have estrogenic properties so any individual with a history of hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis and cancers of the breast, ovaries, prostate, or uterus should contact their doctor before using flaxseed oil.

What essential fatty acids do I get from Salmon oil?
Salmon oil contains high concentrations of Omega 3 essential fatty acids and more specifically large amounts of both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

What benefits of Salmon oil?
Omega 3 essential fatty acids are known to have several benefits in promoting cardiac health, reducing inflammation and in protecting the immune and nervous systems.
  • Reduces blood clots
  • Lowers cholesterol levels
  • Lowers blood pressure by stimulating arteries to dilate
  • Suppresses inflammation for the relief of pain associate with arthritis
  • Supportive treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children

What role does Salmon oil play in the treatment of ADD and ADHD?
DHA is the primary structural component of brain tissue and a deficiency of DHA in the diet could result in compromised brain function. Recent medical research indicates that DHA could have a positive influence on neurotransmitters in the brain, helping brain cells better communicate with each other.

How important is it to take Salmon oil for brain function?
Infants who have low amounts of DHA in their diet have reduced brain development and diminished visual acuity. The increased intelligence and academic performance of breastfed compared with formula- fed infants has been attributed in part to the increased DHA content of human milk.
